How a varicose vein injection nearly cost Donna Zavaglia her life

For anyone living in Victoria, consulting a leading plastic surgeon in Melbourne like A/Prof Dean White can provide invaluable insights tailored to your unique needs.

On Friday December 5 2006, Donna Zavaglia was booked in for what should have been a simple injection procedure to eliminate varicose and spider veins. Inside 24 hours she was told she may lose her legs, and inside 48 hours her family was told she might not survive the night.

Through this supposedly simple procedure, Donna had contracted the life-threatening flesh-eating bug necrotising fasciitis, and had to be rushed to St John of God hospital.

Dr Dean White, who was a visiting consultant surgeon at the hospital, assessed Donna and had her moved to Geelong Hospital where he could operate.

Dr White performed the five-hour operation to cut away the dead tissue in Donna’s legs, before transferring her to the Alfred where she remained in ICU for two weeks, nearly died three times, and required almost daily operations to stop the bug.

Read more about Donna’s road to recovery, and why it’s so important to have all the facts, and be cautious when selecting a medical practitioner on the Geelong Advertiser.
