What to expect from a facelift

Facelift surgery improves the contours of the face and restores definition to the facial features.

It is common for the soft tissues and skin of the face to sag and lose volume as part of the natural ageing process. If you have been affected by these issues, you will be pleased to know that it is possible to restore volume and definition to the face by means of cosmetic surgery. Facelift surgery aims to improve the facial contours and enhance definition in the cheeks, jawline and neck. Read on to find out what the procedure involves and if it’s suitable for you…

For anyone living in Victoria, consulting a leading plastic surgeon in Melbourne like A/Prof Dean White can provide invaluable insights tailored to your unique needs.

What is a facelift, exactly?

As part of the ageing process, skin and soft tissues tend to lose their youthful elasticity. This, in turn, can lead to sagging, lines and wrinkles. Facelift surgery is a procedure that tightens and lifts the facial tissues, and restores definition to the features.

During surgery, excess skin may be removed from the face. Unwanted folds, lines and wrinkles may be smoothed out, and the facial tissues are tightened. A facelift typically focuses on the bottom two-thirds of the face, as well as the neck in some cases. Some patients may choose to have a brow lift performed at the same time as their facelift.

Who is a suitable candidate?

Facelift surgery is often an effective option for those who have noticed sagging and a loss of volume in the face. It is important to note that the procedure does not address facial wrinkles and this issue is best resolved with fillers or anti-wrinkle injections.

We generally recommend that patients are in good overall health before going ahead with facelift surgery. This helps to reduce the risk of surgical complications and ensures a smoother, quicker recovery. It is also important to have realistic expectations of what the surgery involves, as well as the type of results that can be expected. It is always a good idea to discuss the process with your surgeon in detail and to raise any questions or concerns that you might have.

What does the surgery involve?

Facelift surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and the procedure itself usually takes between four and five hours to complete. Usually, an incision is made in the hairline near the temples and extends in front of the ear and around to the lower scalp. Your surgeon will then remove or redistribute excess fat and tissue as required. The underlying muscle and connective tissue are also tightened. If a neck lift needs to be performed at the same time, excess fat and skin will be removed from the area and the skin of the neck will be tightened. Once the procedure is complete, your surgeon will place a drainage tube and dress the site of surgery with bandages.
