Does a breast lift reduce your overall breast size?

Breast lift surgery can sometimes make the breasts appear smaller, although no significant amount of breast tissue is removed.

Breast lift surgery, also known as mastopexy, is a procedure in which the breasts are reshaped and repositioned to improve their overall appearance. Excess skin may be removed during the procedure, but minimal breast tissue is typically removed. Because the breasts are repositioned, they can sometimes appear smaller following surgery. The nipples and areolas are sometimes reduced in size to achieve a more pleasing aesthetic. Read on to find out more about the procedure and your options if you are concerned that your breasts will look smaller after surgery…

Why consider a breast lift?

Many women choose to have breast lift surgery to resolve sagging and droopy breasts following breastfeeding and pregnancy. The breast lift procedure is also often a good option for those who have lost a significant amount of weight and have noticed excess or stretched skin. The surgery can also help to resolve breast unevenness, downward pointed nipples or nipples that extend below the breast crease, skin irritation such as rashes or fungal infections beneath the breasts, and changes that have occurred as a result of the ageing process. The procedure helps resolve these issues and achieve a more pleasing overall shape and balance between the body and the breasts.

How can the size of the breasts be increased?

Although no breast tissue is removed during a breast lift procedure, the position of the breasts is changed, which can sometimes leave the breasts looking a little smaller than before. If this is a concern for you, you might consider having implants placed at the same time. Breast implants work by increasing the size of the breasts and can also help to enhance their shape and symmetry. Patients who would like bigger breasts and improved projection and cleavage often choose to have implants placed at the same time as their breast lift surgery. Breast implants are placed under the breast tissue or muscle of the chest wall.

What does a breast lift involve?

Breast lift surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes between two and three hours to complete. The breast tissue and some skin, glandular tissue, and fat are repositioned, and the breast is remodelled and sutured together. The nipple is also sometimes repositioned. If you choose to have implants placed, they will be inserted as part of the procedure.

After the procedure, you may need to stay in the hospital for a night or two. Dressings will be applied to the site of surgery, and you may experience some discomfort while you heal. We generally recommend that patients take two or three weeks off work and avoid heaving lifting and strenuous activity for around six weeks.
