6 Common Myths About Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is a highly sought-after procedure, especially for those who have large breasts or disproportionate breast shapes. However, many are nervous to undergo this procedure, as there are so many rumours surrounding this surgery.

Here are 6 common myths about breast reduction:

1.   You have to wait until after you have kids to get a breast reduction

Although it is recommended to wait until after you get pregnant to undergo a breast reduction, it is not a rule. As long as you’re healed, having a breast reduction will not affect your ability to fall pregnant or interfere with pregnancy. The main reason why it is recommended to wait, is simply because of the way that breasts tend to expand and sag due to pregnancy.

2.   You can’t breast feed after a breast reduction

Breast feeding is a common concern regarding this surgery. It is true that some milk ducts and tissues in certain areas are removed during the process, but not all of them. Many people find that they are still able to breast feed without problems after undergoing this surgery. Of course, there is always a risk that you might not be able to breast feed post-surgery but many women cannot breast feed at all regardless of undergoing surgery.

3.   Your breasts will grow back after breast reduction

If you undergo breast reduction as an adult, it is uncommon that your breasts will grow back post operatively. To help maintain your breast size, ensure to stay healthy and active. However, it is important to note how our bodies may undergo changes throughout life that affects our weight, skin, and hormones, and there is always a risk of body changes regardless of surgeries.

4.   You lose nipple sensation after breast reduction

All surgical procedures carry risks, however, it is not guaranteed that you will lose nipple sensation after a breast reduction. Following any breast surgery, nipple sensation could be increased, decreased, or may not change at all.

5.   You can’t have a second breast reduction procedure

You can undergo a second breast reduction surgery. If you have previously undergone a breast reduction and have now experienced body changes, weight gain, pregnancies, etc, you can consult a trusted plastic surgeon to find out if you are able to have a second procedure.

6.   Your chances of developing breast cancer are higher after a breast reduction

This is a myth, undergoing a breast reduction does not increase your chances of developing breast cancer. Breast reduction is always a risk for women, regardless of undergoing a breast related surgical procedure. To learn more about this procedure and get the facts, contact a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon. Associate Professor Dean White is fully trained and qualified, specialising in breast surgeries.
