Shape and size after a breast reduction

A breast reduction surgery is a highly individualised procedure. It is completely dependent on your pre-surgical circumstances and your personal goals. This procedure is not a one size fits all situation. So, to determine how your breasts might look after a breast reduction, there are a few determining factors to consider.

How does the plastic surgeon decide what size you should be?

Before a qualified plastic surgeon decides on your post-operative breast shape and size, they will consider the following:
  • What will improve posture
  • Proportionality to your overall body shape
  • Balance
  • Comfort – alleviate pre-surgery pain
  • Whether you still prefer cleavage
  • Achieve a good projection “perkiness”- if you might require a breast lift
  • Scarring location
After having a consultation with you about your goals, your surgeon will be able to suggest the best reduction treatment and size for you.

How small can you go with a breast reduction?

Theoretically, you can go as small as you would like, as long as there is enough breast tissue, milk ducts, and blood supply to support proper breast and nipple function. However, the goal is to keep your breasts looking natural and proportionate to your body.

Does a breast reduction require a breast lift?

Not every breast reduction requires a breast lift. This all depends on the conditions of your breasts. If your breasts were overly heavy and saggy beforehand, or are droopy after losing weight through reduction surgery, the surgeon will most likely incorporate a breast lift into the procedure. The best way to find out what your ideal breast shape would be post-breast reduction, is to have  a consultation with an experienced and qualified plastic surgeon. Associate Professor Dean White is fully trained and qualified, specialising in breast surgeries. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
