What to expect from tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) recovery

It is important to take time to heal properly following tummy tuck surgery

The tummy tuck procedure is a highly effective treatment for those who would like to enhance both the appearance and comfort of the abdominal area. The surgery involves the removal of excess skin and fat and tightens the abdominal muscles. While the procedure generally produces excellent results, it is important to remember that abdominoplasty is major surgery, and it takes time to fully recover from the treatment. Read on to find out what to expect after surgery and how you can enjoy a smooth recovery…

How long does recovery take?

Every patient is different, so when it comes to the recovery following tummy tuck surgery, your timeline will depend on a number of factors. Most patients require a hospital stay of one or two nights following surgery, and you can expect to feel a little uncomfortable for a few days. It is generally advisable to take around three weeks off work, or even more if your job is physically demanding.

You will need to avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for around six weeks following surgery. During this time, you should wear a compression garment, which provides support and prevents fluid from building up. The options for this compression garment are as diverse as the people undergoing the procedure – this will be discussed with you in the consultation with associate Professor White.

Once you feel comfortable enough to drive, you may do so. You will, however, need someone to drive you home from the hospital after your procedure.

How can you aid recovery at home?

When you are back home from the hospital, you must take adequate time to rest and recover. It can be helpful to sleep on an incline or with a pillow under your knees for the first few nights following surgery, as this may reduce swelling and pressure on your abdominal area.

Although you will need to avoid strenuous exercise for a while, it is good to keep active once you are feeling comfortable enough. Try to walk a little each day — this will keep your blood circulation going, reduce the risk of blood clots, and aid the overall healing process.

As you heal from surgery, try to maintain a healthy lifestyle by drinking plenty of water and eating plenty of nourishing foods. Ask your surgeon about how best to reduce visible scarring. If you have any concerns about your recovery, be sure to raise them with your surgeon at your follow-up appointment.

What are the side effects of tummy tuck surgery?

It is completely normal to feel some pain following a tummy tuck procedure. Your surgeon will prescribe medication to provide some relief from this pain and discomfort. You are also likely to experience some swelling, which can last for a few months after surgery.

Other possible side effects of surgery include bruising in your abdominal area, scarring, and fluid build-up. There will also be areas on your skin that feel numb. All of these issues should subside over time.
