Do I Need a Referral to See a Plastic Surgeon?

Yes – as of the 1st of July 2023, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) introduced updated guidelines, which mandate that all patients wishing to consult with a plastic surgeon need a referral from a GP or other relevant specialist.

Does My Usual GP Have to Provide the Referral?

While it is recommended that your referring GP be the same as your usual GP (as they will be aware of your medical history), all AHPRA requires is that your referring doctor is independent of your chosen plastic surgeon.

This means that they should not be a close relative as the surgeon, practice in the same clinic, or belong to the same business and they should have no financial relationship at all.

Does the Referral Have to Outline a Specific Surgery?

No, the referral won’t specify a cosmetic procedure or plastic surgery. Instead, it will just outline your situation and what you’re hoping to achieve with surgery.

The decision on the exact type of procedure you will undergo will be made between you and your plastic surgeon during the consultation.

Can a GP Refuse to Provide a Referral?

Yes, if your doctor feels that your desired cosmetic procedure or plastic surgery isn’t right for you (based on your health or other reasons) they have the right to decline to provide a referral.

Why is a Referral Important When Seeing a Plastic Surgeon?

AHPRA aims to prioritise patient well-being and ensure that they receive appropriate care. As such, there are many reasons why it’s important to get a referral before seeing a plastic surgeon:

  • Holistic Approach
Your GP evaluates your overall health, from your physical to your mental well-being. They’ll consider all of these factors in determining whether you’re fit to undergo surgery or not.
  • Informed Decisions
Your referring doctor can offer personalised advice based on your medical history. They can help you to understand the risks and benefits as they relate specifically to you, leading to informed decision-making.
  • Continuity of Care
Obtaining a referral ensures that your usual GP – who knows you and your medical history – remains part of your care team. They can coordinate with your plastic surgeon for comprehensive care.
  • Medicare Rebates
In some cases, a cosmetic procedure may be deemed an essential reconstructive surgery, so having a referral can actually mean you’re eligible for Medicare rebates.
  • Prevents Impulsivity
The referral process provides a ‘cooling-off period’ of sorts, which gives you time to reflect on your decision and ensure that it really is the right one for you at this present time.

Do All Cosmetic Procedures and Plastic Surgeries Require a Referral?

No, AHPRA only requires a referral for surgical procedures (such as breast augmentation or lift, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, facelifts, liposuction and fat transfer, and cosmetic genital surgery).

Referrals are not required for non-surgical treatments (such as laser treatments, fillers, and cosmetic injectibles).

How Long is a Referral Valid?

A GP referral is valid for 12 months, while a referral from another specialist is generally valid for 3 months.

If you forget to bring your referral to your plastic surgery consultation, it can be supplied afterward. It’s important to note that most GPs will not backdate a referral, so you should organise to see one before your consultation.
