Before Your Consultation
Do I need a referral?
Yes. Consultations require a valid GP or Specialist referral for Medicare eligibility. You may send these in advance or bring it with you on the day of your appointment.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Please bring:
- Your referral
- Medicare and private health insurance details
- Any relevant imaging or test results
- A list of your current medications
- Any questions you’d like to discuss with your surgeon
How long is my consultation?
Most initial consultations are 30 minutes. This time may vary depending on the complexity of your concerns and the procedures being discussed. Plastic surgery requires an additional extended appointment prior to your procedure. This extended appointment will be 60 minutes in duration.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes. Many patients find it helpful to bring a family member or friend for support and to help remember the information discussed.
Will I know if I'm suitable for surgery after my consultation?
A/Prof White will assess your medical history, examine you (where appropriate), discuss your goals and explain the available treatment options. If surgery is appropriate, A/Prof White will explain the expected outcomes, risks and recovery process.
About Surgery
Am I a suitable candidate for surgery?
Suitability depends on many factors including your overall health, medical history, lifestyle, anatomy and treatment goals. Every recommendation is tailored to the individual.
What are the risks of surgery?
All surgical procedures carry risks. During your consultation, A/Prof White will explain the potential risks and complications relevant to your individual procedure, along with the steps taken to minimise these risks.
Risks vary depending on your surgery and may include (but are not limited to):
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Anaesthetic complications
- Blood clots
- Delayed wound healing
Will I have scars?
Any procedure involving an incision will leave a scar. A/Prof Dean White will aim to place incisions as discreetly as possible and will provide guidance on scar management throughout your recovery.
How long do results last?
Results vary depending on the procedure, your lifestyle, genetics and the natural ageing process. A/Prof Dean White will discuss realistic expectations with you.
Preparing for Surgery
How do I prepare for my procedure?
Preparation varies depending on your surgery but may include:
- Completing any requested tests
- Stopping certain medications or supplements
- Ceasing smoking or vaping
- Arranging transport home
- Organising help during your recovery
You will receive detailed pre-operative instructions before your procedure.
Do I need to stop smoking?
Yes. Smoking and vaping can significantly increase the risk of complications and impair healing. A/Prof White will advise how long you should stop before surgery.
Can I continue taking my medications?
Some medications and supplements may need to be stopped before surgery. Always discuss everything you are taking with your surgeon and anaesthetist.
Preparing for Surgery
Where will my surgery be performed?
A/Prof Dean White operates from Epworth Eastern Private Hospital (Box Hill), Adeney Private Hospital (Kew) and performs procedures under local anaesthetic in his consulting rooms (Box Hill). The most appropriate location for your procedure will be discussed during your consultation.
Will I have a general anaesthetic?
This depends on the procedure. Some operations require a general anaesthetic, while others may be performed under local anaesthetic with or without sedation. If light sedation or general anaesthetic is required, you will have a consultation with an anaesthetist prior to your procedure.
Will I need to stay overnight?
Some procedures are day surgery, while others require an overnight stay. A/Prod White will provide you with an expected length of stay.
Recovery
How long will recovery take?
Recovery varies depending on the procedure and the individual. A/Prof White will provide an estimated recovery timeline, including when you can return to normal activities.
When can I return to work?
This depends on the procedure and the type of work you do. Some patients return within a few days, while others require several weeks off.
When can I exercise again?
This is different for each procedure and will be discussed with you during your consultation.
How long will swelling and bruising last?
Swelling and bruising are normal after surgery and gradually improve over several weeks. While most swelling settles by the 6 week mark, some swelling may take several months to fully resolve.
When will I see my final result?
While you will notice changes early, final results often take several months to become fully apparent as swelling resolves and tissues heal.
After Your Surgery
What should I do if I have concerns after surgery?
If you experience increasing pain, excessive swelling, bleeding, fever, or anything that concerns you, please contact our clinic promptly. If you have a medical emergency, seek immediate medical attention or attend your nearest emergency department.
How many follow-up appointments will I need?
Follow-up appointments vary depending on your procedure. Standard process is an initial followup appointment within 1 – 2 weeks of your procedure, then another in 6 weeks. At the 6 week appointment it will be decided how long until your next follow-up.
This is a general guide and will be tailored to each individual as required.
Can I contact the clinic between appointments?
Absolutely. Our team is here to support you throughout your recovery and answer any questions that arise.
